Green is the accent colour that behaves most like a neutral, which is why it has stayed in use while other feature-wall colours have come and gone. Muted, earthy greens — olive, sage, and deep forest tones — sit comfortably against timber, stone, brass, and linen because they share the same desaturated register. Clean bright greens do not, and are much harder to place.
Green's difficulty is undertone. The same paint can read grey against cool trim, yellow against warm oak, and blue under LED lighting, so a sample judged on a chart is close to meaningless. Paint a large sample, put it on the wall it will actually go on, and look at it at three different times of day before ordering.

Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing green from a paper chart, where its undertone cannot be judged against the room's fixed finishes.
- Using a highly saturated green across a large wall, where it intensifies well beyond what the sample suggested.
- Placing a cool-toned green next to warm yellow-toned oak without anything to bridge them.
- Adding heavy planting against a green wall, which removes the contrast that made the wall read as a feature.
